4 Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution
We all know that January is the time for new beginnings, a new year, and of course, new goals. That’s why we have New Year’s resolutions! But how often do you end up keeping that resolution you always swear you’re going to follow through on? Chances are, you probably don’t even remember your resolution from last year, so there’s no way you could’ve stuck to it! If you want an achievable resolution that you CAN keep, read on for tips to help you stay on track with your goals this year!
Choose a Specific and Realistic Goal
One of the most common reasons people end up not sticking to their New Year’s resolutions they set for themselves is because their goals are too lofty or broad, and ultimately they are too difficult to focus on and complete.
People often have the goal that they want to “save more” or “lose weight” or “be happier,” however these are very large and abstract concepts that can become overwhelming to accomplish. It’s much more beneficial to focus on specific actions that will help you reach these more long term goals.
For example, if your goal is to be a more positive person this year, set yourself up for success by resolving to do things like practicing mindfulness, reaching out to friends and family, starting a gratitude journal, or establishing better habits and routines. With these more specific goals, your resolutions will become easily achievable and you’ll feel much more accomplished throughout the year!
Plan and Track Your Progress
Another major factor of failed New Year’s resolutions is procrastination. While we set these goals at the very beginning of the year, it is common for people to push them aside, with the mindset that they have the whole year to accomplish them. Of course, the goals never end up getting done, and it all could have been avoided with planning and tracking progress!
Setting a schedule for your year, and including when you plan to accomplish certain milestones in your resolution will undoubtedly help you stick to them. Furthermore, creating little deadlines with do-able tasks is motivating and gets you excited about your resolutions, instead of intimidated. Also, physically writing your progress will help you stick to your goals.
Being able to look back on a specific plan of action and acknowledge your successes is vital in staying motivated and on track. Remember that you should always be kind to yourself and celebrate your wins when making a major change in your life!
Adjust as Necessary
Life is imperfect, and circumstances and priorities change all the time. It’s perfectly normal that the goals you set out for yourself in the beginning of the year aren’t going to be the same things that you need to prioritize later on in the year. Or, maybe there are things that need to be adjusted based on your schedule, and, well, life in general!
If you make a schedule or a plan for yourself that now seems impossible to achieve, don’t be afraid to re-organize and strategize how you can reach your goals with your new circumstances. Being realistic with what you can successfully accomplish is the only way you’ll get there.
Set Yourself Up for Success
While you strive to accomplish your resolutions out in the world this year, set yourself up for success at home by keeping your house in its best shape. Your living conditions and air quality play a major role on your health and happiness, so make sure your home is properly heated and cooled throughout the changing seasons. Installing an air purification system will ensure you and your family are breathing the highest quality of air to keep you healthy in your home.
