Basic Troubleshooting Problems
Your air conditioner’s cycle is controlled by the setting on the thermostat. If your air conditioner is running but no cool air is exiting the vents, the blower may be the problem or the air conditioner may be dirty. Air conditioner units require cleaning every spring. Regular cleaning prevents clogged filters and condensers, which may obstruct cool air from entering your home.
Thermostat
The thermostat may be the problem if the AC fan is blowing, but there is no cold air exiting the vents. Make sure that your thermostat is set for cooling, and the fan is set to “Auto”. This will enable the fan to turn on when the cooling cycle turns on. If the fan comes on, but no cold air comes out, then the thermostat is not triggering the cooling cycle properly. The thermostat is either faulty or the wiring has been completed incorrectly.
AC Coils
Sometimes the coils within the AC unit are to blame. The evaporator coils are located on the inside unit where the duct work connects to the AC system. The condenser coils are on the outside unit. The sets of AC coils will be protected by a grill or panel, which can be removed using a screwdriver. The AC’s aluminum fins need to be straight and kept clean. Remove dirt and debris with a wire brush, along with a foaming AC coil cleaner.
Refrigerant
AC units use a refrigerant, to cool the air. Leaks or excess refrigerant can impede the system’s performance. Frequents starts and stops of the AC unit is often a sign of a refrigerant leak. Frost on the unit’s evaporator fans on the inside unit is a sign of a refrigerant problem. Contact Bunn’s & Bennett Heating & Air Conditioning and a certified contractor will come and repair the unit and replace the refrigerant.
Drain Pans
AC units are equipped with drain pains that are located underneath the AC coils. The drain pans catch condensation from the unit. It is important to routinely check the drain pan’s piping to ensure it is free of debris that may cause a blockage. If a blockage occurs, the AC system will not operate efficiently. Check the drain pans for overflow, and make sure there are no blockages.
