How Technicians Determine If Your AC System Needs Repairing or Replacing
When a major purchase is on the horizon there are always concerns about how much it will cost. Do you really need something “new”? Can you current item can be repaired without having to be replaced.
The biggest concern homeowners have when they call in an AC technician is “will my unit need to be replaced”? Air conditioners are not cheap. It’s understandable to want to delay the cost of replacement. At some point, replacing the system becomes the most beneficial choice both financially and for your comfort.
How do technicians decide whether an air conditioner should be repaired or replaced? You don’t want to spend the money for a replacement if a relatively inexpensive repair could keep your current system working for a while longer.
When a repair would be too expensive:
Usually, when a technician recommends AC replacement it’s because repairing the air conditioner would cost way too much. Or, the older system is virtually obsolete and the ability to find replacement parts is almost impossible. If a repair is going to cost you about half the price of a new system, it’s almost always worth it to replace the old system.
Going through with the repair might work, but it might only keep the system operating for the rest of the season. It’s also possible some of the other components will start to fail. In the long run, it’s really not worth it to spend a substantial amount of money on a repair when it’s likely the system will have to be replaced. In this case, purchasing a new unit will be much more efficient than the one you have now, and provide you with a worry free warranty period.
Is your current system undersized or oversized for your home?
A professional technician would never recommend replacing an AC system that’s only a few years old unless there was a very good reason. One reason air conditioners are recommended for replacement long before they’re worn out is because of sizing. Improper sizing of the AC unit as it relates to the square footage of your home can cause the system to be overworked. If this is the case, your system will not perform as it was designed to perform.
