How to Get Your Kids Involved With Chores

Get Your Kids Involved With Chores

Summertime means the kids are at home, and they can certainly help out around the house with some of the free time they have! Getting your kids involved with doing chores for the first time or even maintaining chores as a habit can be a difficult feat. However, with a few tricks and tips, you’ll be able to make chores a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your child.

Choosing Age-Appropriate Chores

In order to reduce frustration on both you and your kids, make sure you select chores that are easy to understand and complete based on the age range of your children. For example, older kids can do chores such as walking the dog, doing the dishes, and vacuuming and sweeping. However, younger children are capable of easier tasks, such as setting the dinner table, picking up their toys, pushing chairs in, or helping you wipe off the countertops. Choosing age appropriate chores makes things more enjoyable in the short and the long run.

Establish Positive Habits

It’s important to not get your kids set off on the wrong foot when it comes to establishing chores and responsibilities. Have a discussion about why it’s important for everyone in the home to help out, and how they are positively contributing to the household. If you have multiple kids, be sure to explain why some chores might look different than others depending on their ages, so they understand why they might be assigned more difficult or easy tasks. Routine is also very important, so that chores become part of daily habits, and not something that is either unenforced or used as a punishment.

Chore Charts

A chore chart is a great way to make, well, a chore, into a positive and even exciting activity! Chore charts help you keep the days of the week and what tasks are assigned to who organized, as well as give your kids something to see change every couple days. You can alternate chores between your kids so they don’t do the same thing every day, or switch it up every once and a while. If your kids are reluctant to do chores, even include your name in the chart so that your kids are aware of what you do around the house as well and feel included in helping.

Allowance

Of course, there’s no incentive like money to get kids involved in chores and helping out around the house. Not only will a small allowance give your kids some motivation to get their responsibilities done, but it also teaches them about work and reward. Having a bit of money from chores that they did is an important lesson on working, saving, and feeling proud and accomplished.

Use a Reward System

There’s other ways to reward kids for doing chores other than allowance, but a combination of both can be very effective in getting and keeping kids involved in their chores. You can have a bit of fun with this one, such as inspecting the area that was supposed to be cleaned, or tasks that should have been completed, and give out rewards based on their performance. You can even implement a pseudo-allowance if you don’t feel comfortable giving your kids real money yet with board game money, which they can cash in for things like dessert, watching a movie, an extra hour of video games, or time with friends. This way they are not only motivated to complete the chore, but do it well.
