Do It Yourself AC Maintenence? 4 Things You Can Do

bigstock-do-it-yourselfCan you do it yourself? It’s a popular trend these days. What about performing maintenence on your home’s heating or AC system?

Your home’s HVAC system might seem to be a complicated piece of machinery of which you have no interest in attempting to maintain.

It is true the inner workings of your home’s HVAC system needs to be routinely serviced and inspected by a qualified, licensed technician. However, there are at least four things you can do to keep your system in top running condition even though you might not be mechanically inclined.

Change Your Filters Regularly

Number one, change your air filters regularly. With the busy schedules we all seem to have, forgetting or neglecting the simplest of tasks happens quite often. Most HVAC manufacturers recommend changing your HVAC air filter(s) every month. Most people forget and only change them when there is a problem. Dirty air filters cause your system to work harder thus diminishing its efficiency. This is costing you money in the form of higher utility bills. If an air filter gets too dirty, it can literally cause your system to shut down.

Keep The Area Around Your AC Clean

Number two, keep the area around your outside AC unit clear of all debris. This includes leaves, plants and other things that might obstruct the air flow to your outside unit. Your outside HVAC unit has to be able to take in outside air. If the free passage of air is blocked, your unit will have to work harder to perform as it was designed to.

Make Sure All Vents Are Unobstructed

Number three, make sure your floor and/or wall vents are not covered. Floor vents often get covered by curtains, rugs, furniture and many other items. If a particular floor vent happens to be covered by a rug or some other floor covering, close the vent so your system isn’t continually trying to push air through the covering. If a vent is covered by curtains, rearrange the curtains so the air can flow freely or close the vent.  Wall vents sometimes get covered by pictures or other otems hung on the wall. If you have a wall vent covered by a picture, mirror or some other wall hanging, close the vent or move the item.

Schedule Regular Preventative Maintenence

Number four, schedule regular, routine preventive maintenance service with your local HVAC dealer. Having a qualified, licensed technician check your home HVAC system two times per year can save you a substantial amount of money over a long period of time. Qualified HVAC technicians can and will make sure all the mechanical/operating parts of your HVAC system stay in working condition. A trained technician can spot minor problems and repair them before they turn into major problems.
